With war in the Middle East complicating logistics and public access to sacred sites, Greek authorities and church officials are coordinating a secure operation to bring the Holy Light to Athens and distribute it across the country in time for the Resurrection services.
A Sacred Tradition Amid Uncertain Times
The Holy Light — an ancient symbol of the Resurrection of Christ — is one of the most emotionally and spiritually significant moments for Orthodox Christians worldwide. Every year on Holy Saturday, a flame is miraculously lit at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and then transported to Greece, where it illuminates midnight services across parishes.
This year’s transfer, planned for Holy Saturday (April 11, 2026), faces unprecedented security challenges due to ongoing conflict in the region.
Tight Security in Jerusalem and Transportation Plans
Because of hostilities in the Middle East, especially around Jerusalem’s Old City, security is exceptionally strict:
- Entry to the Old City and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre — the site where the Holy Light is traditionally lit — is now severely restricted, with few or no pilgrims permitted inside.
- Only the Patriarch and a small group of clergy are expected to attend the lighting ritual under these measures.
- Greek officials have devised detailed contingency plans to protect the delegation and ensure the tradition continues. These include contingency routes and careful logistical coordination with Israeli authorities.
Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Loverdos has been a key figure in overseeing the mission and assuring the public that despite war conditions, the operation will go forward.
Loverdos emphasized that the Holy Light symbolizes not just a religious ritual but also renewal and unity — integral to Greek Orthodox identity:“It symbolizes the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and … is very important morally, emotionally, and psychologically.”
Mission Timeline & Execution
The carefully choreographed transfer is expected to unfold as follows:
- Early morning departure — A Greek government aircraft will depart for Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport.
- Road travel to Jerusalem — Due to prevailing restrictions, the Greek delegation will travel by road into Jerusalem for the ceremony.
- Handover ceremony — The Patriarch of Jerusalem will officially hand over the Holy Light to the Greek delegation at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
- Return flight to Athens — After the ceremony, the delegation will return to Tel Aviv and fly back to Athens.
- Nationwide distribution — Upon arrival at Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport, the Holy Light will be distributed across Greece.
From Athens to the Greek Mainland
Once in Athens, a fleet of scheduled flights — primarily coordinated with SKY express — will transport the flame to major regions of the country, preserving the long-standing tradition:
- Alexandroupoli
- Heraklion
- Corfu
- Chania
- Mytilene
- Rhodes
- Santorini
SKY express has played a central role in this mission for years, helping to connect every corner of Greece with the Holy Light for Easter services.
A Tradition Tested by Conflict
This year’s operation underscores how deeply geopolitics can affect even the most cherished religious customs. Initial reports raised fears that the Holy Light might not arrive on time because of war-related restrictions — a scenario prompting emergency planning by Greek and church authorities.
Nevertheless, Greek officials have now expressed confidence that the tradition will be honored — a message of hope and continuity for believers at home and abroad.
What It Means for Greek Society
For many Greeks, the arrival of the Holy Light is more than a ritual — it is the spiritual heart of Orthodox Easter, symbolizing victory over darkness and renewal of faith. Its successful transfer this year, despite regional instability, reflects not only religious devotion but also a cultural resilience that continues to bind the Greek diaspora worldwide.
