Strong development footprint in Crete from the infrastructure projects of AKTOR Συμμετοχές – Focus on growth, water management, and new employment opportunities

In a particularly strategic intervention, the CEO of AKTOR Κατασκευές and AKTOR Συμμετοχές, Αναστάσιος Αρανίτης, highlighted Crete as a key development hub for the coming decade, driven by a wide range of major infrastructure projects reshaping the island’s economic and social landscape.

“Crete is entering a new development era”

Aranitis emphasized that “Crete’s image and economy are being fundamentally reshaped through strategic infrastructure investments”, underlining that the projects extend far beyond transport into critical sectors such as water management, climate resilience, and social cohesion.

BOAK: A landmark national infrastructure project

Special reference was made to the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK), where it was noted that:

“Works are progressing rapidly and key sections will soon be delivered to traffic”

These milestones are expected to significantly improve road safety, mobility, and regional economic activity.

Complex geotechnical sections are reportedly progressing within schedule despite high technical difficulty.

Student Housing: a major social investment

The student dormitory project was described as:

“one of the most innovative PPP schemes in Greece”

With 4,800 apartments planned in Heraklion and Rethymno, the project is expected to:

  • strengthen the University of Crete
  • attract international researchers
  • address the student housing shortage
  • act as a multiplier for the local economy

Water & climate resilience: a strategic priority

Aranitis placed strong emphasis on integrated water management, stating:

“not a single drop of water should go to waste”

He advocated for a holistic approach to water systems, comparing their strategic importance to that of electricity networks.

Development with a social footprint

Finally, it was stressed that the projects delivered by AKTOR Κατασκευές:

  • strengthen employment opportunities
  • attract specialized technical labor
  • boost regional economic activity
  • upgrade Crete’s long-term productive model

“In the next five years, Crete will be a completely different region”, was the central message of Aranitis’ remarks.
