The agenda includes discussions on Hellenic Train, owned by Italy’s Ferrovie dello Stato (FS). Greece is pushing for a €300 million FS investment to upgrade the Athens-Thessaloniki line and suburban rail networks, following the 2023 Tempe train crash that eroded public trust in rail safety.
The second issue is who will maintain the railway lines. The solution is an intergovernmental agreement with a foreign organization that will support OSE in the maintenance and safety of the network.
The system was fully operational at 100% in 2023 but was affected by the damage caused by Storm Daniel, said the Minister of Transport – "Not all problems accumulated over the past decades have been resolved; more work is needed," he emphasized
On Monday, appellate-level examining magistrate Sotiris Baikamis ordered an urgent examination of three videos submitted to the ongoing inquiry. The footage, provided by the company responsible for railway surveillance on behalf of the Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE), is considered “particularly important” in determining the circumstances surrounding the tragic collision.
