In a statement on the current extreme weather - which has already flooded cities like Volos in central Greece's Magnissia prefecture - Kikilias warned the public to follow orders by Civil Protection, the Fire Brigade and the Hellenic Police.
Chaired by Minister Vassilis Kikilias, participants included ministers (State, Environment, Citizen Protection, Shipping), security forces chiefs (Fire Brigade, Armed Forces, Hellenic Police, Port Authority)
The meeting's purpose was to coordinate all related agencies. It was decided to activate the 112 emergency text messaging system in specific areas, depending on weather developments.
On Rhodes in particular, there are 266 firefighters with 55 fire trucks on the ground and 25 aircraft in total.
Kikilias said the interior ministry was taking action to clear bureaucratic obstacles that prevented municipalities from using funds to carry out necessary work to prepare for and prevent natural disasters.
