In response to a pointed question from Zoi Konstantopoulou, leader of the opposition party Plefsi Eleftherias, Gerapetritis emphasised that Greece is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to bring peace to the region.
The vote was carried out by secret ballot, with 154 lawmakers upholding the proposal submitted by governing New Democracy – which has 155 seats in the House.
Citing Article 74, Paragraph 2 of the Constitution, Kaklamanis expressed confidence that all political parties, including the government, support the 151-seat majority. He suggested that no further consultation with the Parliament’s Scientific Council would be necessary to clarify the matter.
According to the Ministry of Transport, the new RTC aims to bring significant changes in road behavior and public safety, with the ultimate goal of substantially reducing traffic fatalities in Greece.
The ruling, which cannot be appealed, was welcomed by Greece’s center-right government. It reduces the number of MPs in the 300-seat Hellenic Parliament to 297 and lowers the threshold for an absolute majority from 151 to 149 votes. The decision is effective for the remainder of the current parliamentary term, ending in 2027.
