According to the National Observatory of Athens, recent satellite data shows sea surface temperatures across Greece ranging from 20 to 22°C — notably above average for this time of year. The unusually high readings are attributed to a combination of seasonal heat and the absence of strong winds, which normally help cool the water.
This event follows a series of earthquakes in February that prompted Santorini to declare a state of emergency due to unusual seismic activity.
“Athens, whose wider metropolitan area is home to 3.6 million people, narrowly avoided a catastrophic fire—but only just,” the FT article notes, reminding readers of the devastating fire in 2024, when flames reached the Halandri area after passing through Penteli.
Mitsotakis emphasised that "affordable housing is a right for everyone and an obligation of the State," and noted that Tuesday's announcements were the result of a prudent and successful fiscal policy: "This is what allowed us to surpass our fiscal targets and return the surplus to citizens through targeted policies."
“We are deeply alarmed by reports of violent clashes resulting in numerous civilian deaths in Syria. We urge all parties to act with restraint, pursue peaceful resolutions, and avoid steps that could escalate tensions further,” the statement, shared on X, declared.
According to the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the epicentre of the earthquake was located in the sea area 27 kilometres southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos.
