The figures align with recent Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) data on deprivation, highlighting a persistent gap between Greece and the EU average. From 2023 to 2024, Greece’s at-risk population grew by 0.8%, adding over 80,000 individuals. Eurostat notes that official numbers likely understate the issue, as marginalized groups like the homeless, Roma, prisoners, and those in institutions or camps are often excluded from surveys.

“Admitting 10,000-20,000 Chinese students every year to Greek universities, under all programs, would be a realistic goal,” according to the SiG President.
“Last summer it was Saint-Tropez, the summer before that was the Amalfi Coast,” she said, referring to the famous French and Italian resorts, respectively. “People are booking Greece left, right and center now.”
Greek Immigration and Asylum Minister Makis Voridis told Skai news channel that accepting such returns is “out of the question” given Greece’s position as the EU’s second-highest host of refugees per capita, after Cyprus. “As long as there is no fair distribution of burdens within the European Union, Greece will not accept any returns,” Voridis stated, emphasizing that returns would not address the broader migration issue.
