Greece assumed the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council from France on Thursday, overseeing the council’s activities for May.
Greece’s UN envoy, Evangelos Sekeris, announced at a press conference that the presidency will prioritize maritime security and the protection of civilians in armed conflicts. A key event, an open debate on maritime security under the theme of international peace and security, is scheduled for May 20. This high-level meeting will be chaired by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Sekeris highlighted additional meetings focusing on Lebanon, Libya, Syria, and Yemen, with efforts to promote de-escalation in the India-Pakistan conflict. The situation in Gaza will also be discussed during the monthly meeting, with the possibility of further sessions based on developments.

Additionally, a semi-annual debate on Bosnia and Herzegovina is set for May 6. Sekeris emphasized Greece’s approach of inclusive dialogue, stating, “We follow a principle of open policy, ensuring all views are heard and avoiding surprises.” He noted that prior consultation with council members has proven effective in the first four months of Greece’s term.
The Security Council presidency will transition to Guyana in June.
