Greece and Egypt signed a “strategic partnership” agreement in Athens to enhance political coordination and promote stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis hailed the agreement as a milestone in the deep-rooted ties between the two nations. “Greek-Egyptian relations have immense potential and are poised for further growth,” he said, noting that the partnership builds on a history of strong cooperation and aims to deliver tangible results.

The agreement, signed during the first meeting of the Supreme Cooperation Council, reflects a shared commitment to deepen collaboration. Mitsotakis highlighted new opportunities in energy, shipping, education, culture, and trade, with regular consultations and three Memoranda of Cooperation signed in shipping, cultural exchange, and Information and Communication Technologies.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi emphasized mutual respect as the foundation of the partnership, stating, “We are determined to strengthen this strategic relationship with Greece.”

Energy cooperation was a key focus, particularly the GREGY Interconnector, which will enable Greece to serve as a gateway for affordable wind and solar energy from Egypt to Europe. Mitsotakis underscored its importance for the energy security of both continents.

The leaders also discussed a bilateral labor agreement to recruit Egyptian seasonal workers for Greece’s agriculture, construction, and manufacturing sectors.

On regional matters, Mitsotakis and Sisi addressed developments in Gaza, Syria, Libya, and the Turkish-occupied north of Cyprus. Mitsotakis praised Egypt as a vital partner, emphasizing shared views on regional stability and support for a Cyprus solution based on UN resolutions. “In an era of global uncertainty, Greece and Egypt stand as pillars of stability,” he said.

The partnership is expected to bolster bilateral trade, energy security, and regional cooperation, with both leaders optimistic about its future impact.
