Energy minister Sanja Bozhinovska announced on Wednesday that North Macedonia’s state-owned gas transmission operator, Nomagas, has signed a contract worth €83.7 million with domestic construction company Rapid Build to construct the country’s section of a long-anticipated natural gas interconnector with Greece.
The project includes the construction of a 68-kilometer pipeline and is a major step in enhancing regional energy connectivity and diversification. Bozhinovska hailed the deal on Facebook, saying, “This interconnector proves that when political will, regional trust, and professional commitment align, real and tangible results follow.”
According to a November report by local outlet Vecer, the contract follows a competitive tender process that drew bids from five companies, including two Italian firms, one Turkish firm, and one Serbian. Construction is expected to be completed within 34 months of the contract signing.
The project will be funded through loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and an investment grant from the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF).
The gas interconnector is seen as a strategic project for both North Macedonia and Greece, strengthening energy security and integration across the Balkans.
