Greece and Israel have taken a significant step forward in defense collaboration, signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and the Hellenic Aerospace Industry (EAB) during this year’s DEFEA defense expo in Athens, held from May 6 to 8 according to greek city times
At the heart of the agreement is “BlueWhale,” a state-of-the-art autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) developed by Israel. Designed for various high-risk maritime missions, the unmanned system is capable of covert operations, including intelligence gathering, submarine and underwater target detection, acoustic surveillance, and minefield mapping on the seabed.
The BlueWhale platform has been offered to the Hellenic Navy, with Greece now poised to play a critical role in its production and further technological development. The partnership marks a major step in Greece’s strategy to modernize its defense capabilities and grow its domestic defense industry.

Through this agreement, Greece will gain direct access to advanced Israeli military technology, which is regarded as some of the most sophisticated in the world. In return, Israel secures a reliable European partner for joint development and potential deployment of strategic defense assets according to greek city times
The cooperation also includes provisions for technology transfer and joint participation in future defense projects, signaling deeper ties between the two countries’ defense sectors.
The BlueWhale system is a formidable engineering piece: an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) that measures 10.9 meters in length, 1.12 meters in diameter, and weighs approximately 5.5 tons.
The partnership reflects Greece and Israel’s growing strategic alignment in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially in defense innovation, security cooperation, and regional stability
