With the start of Donald Trump’s second term, the U.S.-China rivalry has taken on a new dimension. This competition appears to be impacting Greek ports, according to an article published today by the Turkish newspaper Yeni Şafak.

The newspaper titled its article “Trump Sets Sights on Greek Ports.”

“With the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term, U.S. foreign and economic policy is being reshaped,” Yeni Şafak writes. The article adds:

“According to reports in the neighboring Greek press, when Trump appointed Kimberly Guilfoyle as U.S. Ambassador to Greece in December 2024, a month after the elections, he planned to entrust her with a significant task. This task was to reduce China’s influence in the region. One way to achieve this was by gaining control over Greek ports.”

As the author notes: “It is well known that the U.S. seeks to control the port of Thessaloniki. The article suggests that its proximity to Central Europe ‘perfectly aligns’ with Trump’s goals for establishing the India-Middle East-Europe (IMEC) corridor to support India’s trade policy, ‘his chosen partner in countering China.’”

The article further states: “Piraeus is the largest port in the Mediterranean and Greece, both in terms of passenger traffic and container handling, and the U.S. has long been wary of Chinese ownership of the port of Piraeus. In this context, the U.S. is also closely monitoring the activities of COSCO, China’s state-owned shipping and logistics company. According to Kathimerini, the U.S. wants Greece to pressure COSCO to abandon Piraeus, although, as expected, this is a highly complex undertaking.”
