In a landmark move to promote sports tourism, Greece’s Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, and the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), Isidoros Kouvelos, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation today.The signing took place in the presence of Deputy Tourism Minister Anna Karamanli and HOC General Secretary Stefanos Chandakas.
This agreement marks the first formal collaboration between the two entities, aiming to harness Greece’s unique potential in sports tourism. Both parties emphasized that Greece’s favourable climate, infrastructure, and cultural heritage provide a competitive edge in attracting athletes and hosting international sporting events year-round across all regions.
The partnership will focus on promoting lesser-known sports in various regions, diversifying Greece’s sports offerings and boosting local economies. “Sports are an integral part of our national identity, deeply tied to our culture, outward-looking spirit, and Olympic values,” said Minister Kefalogianni. She highlighted the role of trust and shared values in strengthening ties between the Tourism Ministry and the HOC, which will enhance the organisation of sports tourism initiatives.
The agreement aims to showcase lesser-known regions through major sporting events and the development of training centers, delivering direct benefits to local communities. Kefalogianni also praised the HOC’s commitment to sustainability in sports, aligning with the ministry’s goals for sustainable tourism development.
The presence of Deputy Minister Anna Karamanli, a former athlete with a distinguished sports background, adds significant weight to the collaboration. HOC President Kouvelos noted, “Through sports tourism and major events, Greece gains global visibility and economic benefits.
