Greek tennis star Maria Sakkari secured her place in the second round of Wimbledon with a commanding 2-0 victory (6-4, 6-4) over Russia’s Anna Blinkova in a 78-minute match on Court 8.

The world No. 77, Sakkari, showcased resilience in a competitive first set, where both players exchanged breaks. Leading 5-2, Sakkari faced a spirited comeback from Blinkova (No. 78), who closed the gap to 5-4 and saved three set points. However, the Greek champion held firm, sealing the set in 42 minutes.

The second set saw Blinkova elevate her game, matching Sakkari game for game up to 3-2. Sakkari surged to a 4-2 lead with a crucial break, only for Blinkova to respond immediately, leveling the score at 4-4. Undeterred, Sakkari relied on her powerful serve to regain control, clinching the set 6-4 and securing her first major tournament victory in 12 months.
