Sweets and beverages became more expensive due to soaring global cocoa and coffee prices, while cooler-than-usual weather in 2025 drove up fruit and vegetable costs.

Grocery store inflation in Greece fell to 1.78% in June, down from 2.47% in May, according to data released by the Institute for Retail Consumer Goods Research (IELKA). The monthly inflation rate showed a 0.35% decrease, while the 12-month figure (July 2024 – June 2025) recorded a marginal annual rise of just 0.25%.

IELKA notes that overall inflationary pressures during the first half of 2025 have been relatively mild, averaging 1.13%. These are largely attributed to global price increases in key raw materials such as cocoa, coffee, and meat.

Biggest Price Drops

Significant year-on-year price decreases were observed in several product categories in June 2025: • Cleaning products and detergents: -8.28% • Dry grocery items: -5.40% • Personal care, paper goods, cosmetics: -3.13% • Appetizers and delicatessen items: -2.72% • Pet food and supplies: -0.52%

IELKA attributes these declines to a general stabilization of the market and falling producer prices in key product segments, including a notable easing in olive oil prices.

Steepest Price Hikes

On the other end, the steepest price increases compared to June 2024 were recorded in: • Fresh meats: +10.80% • Biscuits, chocolates, and sweets: +10.19% • Fresh fruits and vegetables: +7.55% • Frozen goods: +2.74% • Refrigerated dairy products and juices: +2.22%

The sharp rise in fresh meat prices is mainly due to a drop in livestock numbers in 2024 from widespread animal diseases, especially in rural areas. Imported meat costs, particularly beef, have also surged due to global market pressures.

Sweets and beverages became more expensive due to soaring global cocoa and coffee prices, while cooler-than-usual weather in 2025 drove up fruit and vegetable costs. In contrast, extreme heat in summer 2024 led to an early harvest that briefly lowered prices.
