The funding, approved by Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki, is part of the Sectoral Development Program for Higher Education (2021-2025). It aims to strengthen university operations in “critical areas, covering both student needs and academic and administrative functions.”

The Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports has announced a €4.7 million investment in the University of Thessaly and the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) to enhance campus safety, maintenance, and technical support for the 2025-2026 period.

The funding, approved by Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki, is part of the Sectoral Development Program for Higher Education (2021-2025). It aims to strengthen university operations in “critical areas, covering both student needs and academic and administrative functions.”

Minister Zacharaki emphasized that “enhancing safety, technical support, and functionality in Greek public universities is a top priority.” She described the initiative as “a substantial investment in infrastructure, improving students’ daily lives and supporting academic and administrative work.” according to greek city times

Planned interventions include:

  • Building repairs and structural damage restoration

  • Electrical, plumbing, and mechanical upgrades

  • Technical maintenance for teaching, laboratory, and administrative equipment

University-Specific Allocations:

  • University of Thessaly (€3.7 million): Funds will go toward maintenance of buildings and electromechanical systems across multiple Thessaly campuses, ensuring safety for students and staff while preventing technical failures.

  • Hellenic Mediterranean University (€1 million): The budget will support infrastructure repairs, equipment upgrades, and facility maintenance across HMU’s Cretan campuses, ensuring uninterrupted and secure operations.

Zacharaki stressed that the upgrades “will significantly improve learning and working environments” while reinforcing regional universities’ role in local development and academic excellence.

“We are moving forward with a clear plan, speed, and transparency to build a modern and reliable public university system—one that meets the expectations of the new generation,” she concluded.
