In a performance that once again confirmed his world-class status, Miltos Tentoglou secured the gold medal in the men’s long jump at the 2025 Balkan Athletics Championships in Volos — and he only needed one valid attempt to do it.
The two-time Olympic gold medalist delivered a stunning leap of 8.07 meters on his second attempt, which proved more than enough to outclass the competition. His first jump was a foul, during which he appeared to slightly injure his hand upon landing. After briefly showing visible discomfort, the Greek champion refocused — and on his second try, he soared ahead of the pack.
Rather than continue jumping, Tentoglou chose to skip the remaining rounds, citing concerns over the condition of the landing pit and the safety of the sand.
“I was worried about my neck. If I’d gone for another jump, I might’ve gotten injured,” Tentoglou explained after the event.
Despite being ready to jump again if needed, the reigning European and Olympic champion watched as no competitor came close to challenging his mark. Bulgaria’s Bozhidar Saraboyukov finished second with a jump of 7.90 meters, and North Macedonia’s Andreas Trajkovski claimed bronze with 7.77 meters.

🇬🇷 Golden Day for Greece in Volos
Beyond Tentoglou’s headline performance, several other Greek athletes delivered gold-medal-winning efforts on Saturday:
-
Elina Tzengko threw 62.83 meters in the women’s javelin to take first place in dominant fashion.
-
Rafailia Spanoudaki sprinted to victory in the women’s 100 meters, reaffirming her place as one of Greece’s top sprinters.
-
The Greek women’s 4x100m relay team also secured gold, showing excellent coordination and speed in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
-
Additional strong showings came from hammer thrower Mihalis Anastasakis, middle-distance runner Panagiotis Despollaris, and high jumper Koreneva, all of whom contributed to Greece’s medal haul.
With the home advantage and top-level performances across the board, Greece has firmly established itself as the dominant force at the Balkan Championships this year.
As the competition continues, all eyes remain on Greek athletes who are using this platform not just to win medals but also to prepare for upcoming global events — including the World Championships and the Paris 2026 European Athletics Championships.
