Beaches in Chalkida, Euboea have recently been swarmed by dozens of purple jellyfish, which have appeared along the coastline of Kourenti and Papathanasiou beaches.
There is growing concern over the sharp increase in the presence of purple jellyfish in Greek waters.
The most significant outbreaks have been reported in northern Euboea, the northern Sporades, and specifically in Skiathos and Skopelos.
According to the Hellenic Biodiversity Observatory, swimmers in these areas are advised to be especially cautious.
“Unfortunately, our initial estimates about the intensity of the purple jellyfish bloom in the Pagasetic Gulf and surrounding regions were underestimated. This was due to low citizen participation in public reports, which gave a distorted picture of the actual situation,” the announcement stated.
Chalkida Beaches Filled with Purple Jellyfish
Just yesterday (August 9), beaches in Chalkida were filled with dozens of purple jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca), which were seen along the shores of Kourenti and Papathanasiou beaches.
Despite the warnings, many beachgoers continued to swim, ignoring the risk of being stung—a sting that can cause intense pain, irritation, and in some cases, severe allergic reactions.
The appearance of purple jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca) has become increasingly common in Greek waters, especially during the summer months due to rising sea temperatures and the effects of climate change.
What to Do If You’re Stung by a Purple Jellyfish
- Exit the water immediately.
- Rinse the affected area thoroughly with seawater – never with fresh water, as it can worsen the symptoms.
- Do not rub or touch the area with bare hands.
- If visible tentacles remain, carefully remove them using gloves and tweezers (if available).
- Apply a paste made of baking soda and seawater (1:1 ratio), leave it on for a few minutes, then gently scrape offwith a plastic card (e.g., a bank card).
- Use cortisone cream and cold compresses to reduce inflammation.
- Antihistamines may be administered only with medical advice.
- If you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction (such as swelling, difficulty breathing, or hoarseness), seek immediate medical attention and call an ambulance.
