In an atmosphere of profound sorrow and respect, the funeral service for Apostolos Vesyropoulos, former Deputy Finance Minister and Secretary General of the New Democracy Parliamentary Group, was held at the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Alexandria, Imathia.

The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the President of the Hellenic Parliament Nikitas KaklamanisDeputy Prime Minister Kostis HatzidakisEU Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, and numerous ministers, MPs, MEPs, local officials, and members of the public, paying tribute to a figure widely respected across the political spectrum.

Mitsotakis’ Emotional Tribute: “Psile, you will be missed”

Delivering a deeply emotional eulogy, Prime Minister Mitsotakis said:“With a heavy heart, I bid farewell today on behalf of the New Democracy Parliamentary Group, and the entire party, to our dearly loved Apostolos.”

Referring to him affectionately as “Psilos” (Tall one), the Prime Minister described Vesyropoulos as a man of kindness, optimism, and unwavering dedication, both to his constituents and to the nation.

He highlighted Vesyropoulos’ key role in shaping Greece’s economic policy, particularly in the reduction of taxationduring his four-year tenure as Deputy Finance Minister.

“His work will be remembered not only in political discourse, but also in the lasting impact he had on citizens’ lives,” Mitsotakis emphasized.

A Broad Political Presence in a Rare Moment of Unity

The funeral brought together representatives from across the political and institutional spectrum, including:

  • Ministers A. Skertsos, N. Dendias, K. Tsiaras, M. Chrysochoidis
  • Deputy Ministers S. Kalafatis, K. Karagounis, L. Tsavdaridis, N. Papaiōannou, among others
  • Former ministers and regional officials
  • Opposition representatives, such as Sokratis Famellos (SYRIZA), Paris Koukoulopoulos (PASOK-KINAL), Leonidas Stoltidis (KKE), and Peti Perka (New Left)

Eulogies were also delivered by Mayor of Alexandria Panagiotis Gkyrinis and a representative of Metropolitan Panteleimon, underscoring the broad social and institutional appreciation Vesyropoulos enjoyed.

A Quiet Farewell, a Lasting Legacy

As the flag-draped coffin exited the church, mourners paid their respects in silence, with a gentle round of applause echoing the collective gratitude of the community.

Apostolos Vesyropoulos leaves behind a legacy not only of public service and effective governance, but also of humility, integrity, and approachability—qualities that are increasingly rare in contemporary politics.

“He didn’t seek the spotlight, but his work and character illuminated our public life,” one attendee remarked.
