The Prime Minister inaugurated the new Municipal Library of Amorgos, emphasized the importance of historical awareness for national strength, and outlined landmark initiatives for marine parks, local development, and environmental protection.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Amorgos to inaugurate the island’s new Municipal Library, a project funded under the “Antonis Tritsis” program of the Ministry of Interior. This initiative is part of the celebrations for the 200-year anniversary of Greek independence.

During his speech, Mitsotakis emphasized:

“The strength of a country is not only defined by how strong its Armed Forces are or how robust its economy is. It is directly linked to the sense of self-confidence and self-awareness that a nation must have, which itself is a product of understanding its historical journey. A nation that does not learn from its mistakes is doomed to repeat them.”

He also highlighted the contemporary challenges facing Greece:

“In these critical times, with major geopolitical shifts, climate challenges, and the rise of artificial intelligence, being well-grounded in our history and carefully studying its lessons is of even greater importance.”

The library, he noted, is not just a cultural space but a hub for community engagement and dialogue:

“We bring knowledge back to its core: study, reflection, discussion, and constructive disagreement.”

Landmark Initiatives and Local Development

During an extended meeting at the Amorgos Town Hall, attended by ministers, local authorities, and European representatives, Mitsotakis highlighted the significance of the “Amorgorama” project for marine conservation:

“An initiative that emerged from civil society, embraced by the Municipality, and institutionalized by the government. It sets a benchmark for protecting marine environments in other island and coastal areas in Greece.”

He announced the creation of two large Marine Parks, one in the southern Ionian and one in the Southern Cyclades, extending eastward to Amorgos and the islets of Kinaros and Levitha:

“This protection zone concerns the exercise of our national sovereignty and places us at the forefront of Europe in marine environmental protection.”

Healthcare, Energy, and Infrastructure

On healthcare, Mitsotakis stressed that Amorgos’ Health Center will be fully upgraded and staffed with permanent medical personnel. Protocols for patient transfers in the Cyclades will also be re-evaluated:

“I maintain constant pressure on the Ministry of Health to ensure essential medical specialties for an island like Amorgos.”

On energy:

“Within a reasonable timeframe, the islands’ connection to the main electricity grid will be completed through a €5 billion project by ADMIE, crucial for energy security and reducing electricity costs.”

Regarding urban planning and construction:

“Our aim is to limit out-of-plan building and expand settlements in a measured way, protecting the environment.”

Fiscal Measures

On property taxes (ENFIA) and VAT, the Prime Minister announced:

“From next year, all residents of Amorgos will pay 50% reduced ENFIA, and from 2027 they will pay nothing. This applies to over 650 villages in the Cyclades.”

Regarding VAT:“With the creation of fiscal space, we aim to extend reduced VAT rates to other small islands.”

Mitsotakis’ visit to Amorgos combined cultural heritage, environmental protection, and modern governance priorities. His speech highlighted the importance of historical awareness for national strength, sustainable island development, and the enhancement of local infrastructure, sending a clear message of consistency and strategic vision for Greece’s future.
