The President of the “Tempi 2023” Association denounces the government’s proposal to transfer the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to the Ministry of Defense, accusing the Prime Minister of trying to silence collective memory.

With a fiery statement on social media, Maria Karystianou, mother of a Tempi train crash victim and President of the “Tempi 2023” Association, launched a scathing attack against the government over its proposal to transfer the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to the Ministry of Defense.

Karystianou slammed the government’s “arrogant belief” that the country and its symbols belong to them, stressing:

“The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier belongs to all Greeks. You own nothing. You are merely temporary administrators—corrupt and failed ones.”

She further accused the government of using the proposal as “punishment against public protest” and warned:

“Don’t you dare claim ownership of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, because you will find us standing against you.”

A Symbol of Resistance and Collective Memory

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, located in front of the Greek Parliament, has become a symbolic site for gatherings and protests, particularly by the families of the Tempi victims demanding justice and transparency.

The government claims the proposal aims to ensure “order and security.” However, critics argue that this is a clear attempt to silence public demonstrations and restrict access to a powerful national symbol of unity and remembrance.

Fury over the Trial of the “Deleted” Videos

Karystianou also reacted strongly to the start of the trial concerning the deleted CCTV footage related to the Tempi tragedy, launching a direct attack on both investigating judge Sotiris Bakaimis and the Prime Minister.

“The Prime Minister, in an effort to shield his government from its involvement in the Tempi crime, erases with authoritarian decrees anything that reminds people of it,” she said.

She raised critical questions fueling public outrage: “Who gave the order to delete the footage? Why didn’t the judge act on his own initiative, as he should have, over such a deceitful act?”

“We Will Always Stand Before the Monument”

The President of “Tempi 2023” made it clear that the fight for justice and remembrance will not be silenced:

“We, along with all of society, will always be present—right in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier!”

Her statement comes at a politically sensitive time, as Parliament prepares to debate the controversial government proposal—a move that has already ignited widespread public backlash.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is more than a monument. It is a symbol of unity, historical memory, and the people’s voice. And this time, society appears determined not to give it up without a fight.
