Athens at the Center of US Energy Strategy: Gilfoyle Takes the Helm
New US Ambassador assumes office as Greece hosts 6th P-TEC forum with 24 countries and LNG leaders

Kimberly Gilfoyle, the 25th United States Ambassador to Greece, officially presented her credentials to President Konstantinos Tasoulas, formally taking office as the head of the US diplomatic mission in Athens. Her agenda includes high-level meetings with Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, with a central focus on strengthening US-Greece strategic cooperation, particularly in energy and infrastructure.

The US Embassy highlighted that “The enduring strength of US-Greece relations comes from the dedication and commitment of our personnel,” signaling the importance of American diplomatic presence in the Eastern Mediterranean.

P-TEC: Athens as a Geopolitical and Energy Hub

The 6th Partnership for Transatlantic Energy Cooperation (P-TEC) Conference, scheduled for November 6–7 at the Zappeion Hall, positions Athens as a key energy hub in Europe. The forum is co-organized by the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy, the US Department of Energy, and the Atlantic Council Global Energy Center, hosting 24 European energy ministers, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.

P-TEC was founded by former US Energy Secretary Rick Perry under the Three Seas Initiative, a platform uniting countries between the Baltic, Adriatic, and Black Seas. Its mission is to strengthen energy connectivity, security, and cooperation between the United States and Central/Eastern European nations.

Strategic and Geopolitical Implications

  • Energy Security: Greece becomes a vital node for a safe, sustainable, and resilient energy transition in the Eastern Mediterranean.
  • Transatlantic Cooperation: The conference and ambassadorial arrival highlight US commitment to supporting energy infrastructure, LNG networks, and electricity grids across Europe.
  • Economic and Social Impact: P-TEC promotes a sustainable, collaborative energy market, delivering economic, environmental, and social benefits to the participating nations.

The event will focus on shared energy infrastructure, LNG collaboration, pipelines, and electricity networks, while the European Commission will be represented by Director-General for Energy Ditte Jul Jorgensen.

The arrival of Ambassador Gilfoyle and the P-TEC forum signal a new chapter in US-Greece energy relations, positioning Athens as a critical hub in transatlantic energy strategy. This move not only strengthens diplomatic ties but also creates opportunities for long-term investment and strategic partnerships, with Greece at the forefront of a secure, sustainable, and interconnected European energy market.
