Greek Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Domna Michailidou announced a series of major interventions in state housing programs, aiming to restore transparency and public trust.
More than 3,000 fraudulent applications were revoked from the “Renovate & Rent” scheme, while 8,500 citizens will receive €1,000 each via prepaid cards as part of a new digital reward initiative.
Fraud detected and stopped early
Out of 3,700 pre-approved cases, authorities found over 3,000 irregular applications, including 1,200 in Ilia where several applicants claimed subsidies for the same property.“We caught it in time — no public money was lost. The system remembers and now controls in real time,”said Michailidou.
The program offers grants up to €14,000 and covers 60% of renovation costs, encouraging owners to reopen closed properties for rent and expand affordable housing.
Support for people with disabilities
Through the “Accessibility at Home” scheme, 5,500 beneficiaries can receive up to €14,500 to adapt homes with ramps, electric shutters, or lowered panels. The process is now simpler — no engineer report is needed for certain works, and engineers’ fees rise by €450 to accelerate approvals.
“My Home 2” and the housing boost
The “My Home 2” program has already absorbed 62% of its budget, with 20,000 housing loans granted to young people. Michailidou hinted at new age and income limits and noted that property prices within the scheme are lower than the market average thanks to increased housing supply.
€1,000 prepaid bonuses for 8,500 citizens
A national lottery next week will reward 8,500 citizens with €1,000 each through prepaid cards. Participants earn raffle entries based on their electronic purchases — one entry for the first 50% of digital transactions, and one extra per additional 5%.
A new model of social policy
“Social policy is not just benefits — it’s freedom and opportunity,” Michailidou stressed.
Her ministry’s strategy blends digital monitoring, accountability, and inclusion, signaling a shift from handouts to empowerment.
Greece’s new social policy doesn’t just distribute aid — it builds trust, dignity, and independence
