The 3rd Greece–Cyprus Intergovernmental Summit in Athens marked a new phase for the Greece–Cyprus electricity interconnection, a project that goes far beyond bilateral cooperation and steps firmly into the realm of Europe’s energy security and geopolitical strategy.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides announced the update of the project’s technical and financial parameters, aiming to attract new, strong investors who will secure the economic sustainability and acceleration of this flagship infrastructure.
A strategic energy bridge
The Greece–Cyprus electricity link, known as the EuroAsia Interconnector, is a key component in the Eastern Mediterranean’s energy integration network. It will connect Cyprus to the European electricity market, strengthening the EU’s energy autonomy and reducing dependence on external suppliers.
Mitsotakis stressed that the project “enhances Europe’s energy supply security and upgrades Greece and Cyprus into energy hubs of regional importance.” The anticipated entry of new investors—potentially from European and Middle Eastern markets—is expected to boost the project’s financial resilience and ensure timely implementation.
Athens and Nicosia: A growing axis of stability
President Christodoulides described the summit as proof of a “continuously deepening strategic relationship”, extending beyond traditional national issues into energy, environment, civil protection, and digital governance. The close cooperation between Greece and Cyprus serves as a model of regional coordination amid instability in the broader Eastern Mediterranean.
Cyprus is also preparing to assume the Presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2026, a development that strengthens coordination between Athens and Nicosia on European, energy, and security policies.
Energy, geopolitics, and a shifting balance of power
The project’s update is not just technical—it represents a geopolitical statement. Greece and Cyprus aim to act as pillars of stability and energy connectivity linking Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.
The trilateral partnerships among Greece, Cyprus, and Israel, supported by the United States, are evolving into platforms of geopolitical dialogue and investment cooperation. As Christodoulides put it:“Through joint initiatives, Greece and Cyprus can help bring the EU and the U.S. closer together.”
The road ahead
The restart of the Greece–Cyprus power cable project is far more than a technical update — it is a political signal of intent: the Eastern Mediterranean is transforming from a region of competition into a zone of strategic cooperation.
Its successful completion will help define Europe’s energy future while solidifying Greece and Cyprus’s role as active shapers of the new geopolitical landscape.
Energy today is no longer just about infrastructure — it is a tool of diplomacy, security, and sustainable growth.
