Greece is reportedly in intense negotiations with Israel to purchase advanced missile and air defense systems as part of its ambitious defense program “Achilles’ Shield”, according to two senior officials cited by Reuters.
The Greek government has announced plans to spend around €28 billion by 2036 to fully modernize its armed forces, aiming to strategically keep pace with Turkey. Of this, €3 billion is earmarked for the development of a multi-layered air and missile defense system, designed to replace aging Russian systems such as OSA, TOR-M1, and S-300.
In addition, Greece plans to acquire stealth fighter jets, frigates, and submarines from the U.S. and Europe, boosting its overall defense capabilities in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
One official stated that Greece intends to purchase 36 PULS artillery systems, manufactured by the Israeli company Elbit Systems, at an estimated cost of €650 million. Furthermore, roughly 25% of the project will be carried out by Greek defense firms, supporting domestic defense production.
Greece had already expressed interest in Israeli systems in 2024, but negotiations were delayed due to Israeli military operations in Gaza. According to officials, talks are expected to intensify in the coming month, potentially paving the way for a multi-billion euro deal.
Reuters emphasizes that Greece-Israel cooperation goes beyond weapons sales. In recent years, the two countries have strengthened economic and diplomatic ties, conducted joint military exercises, and established an air training center in southern Greece. This strategic collaboration enhances security in the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly amid rising tensions with Turkey.
While Greek sources confirm the progress of negotiations, the Israeli Ministry of Defense has not yet commented, leaving the final deal in suspense.
If completed, this investment will not only strengthen Greece’s air and missile defense capabilities but also send a powerful strategic message to the region, demonstrating its commitment to technological modernization and regional stability.
