Greece strengthens its naval power with the fourth Standard 2++ frigate, while the first FDI “Kimon” arrives in Faliron Bay this December.

Fourth FDI HN Officially Delivered

The procurement process for the F-600 “Themistocles” frigate has been completed, marking the addition of the fourth FDI HN Standard 2++ to the Hellenic Navy. On Friday, November 14, the first modification of contracts 16B/21 and 17B/21 was signed by Lieutenant General Ioannis Bouras, Director General of Defense Investments and Armaments (GDAEE), covering the supply of the new frigate along with continuing support services provided by NAVAL Group.

This milestone follows the October parliamentary approval of Law 5235/2025 (Official Gazette A 173), paving the way for a significant upgrade of Greece’s naval capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Flag Raising Ceremony for the First FDI HN “Kimon”

The first FDI frigate, F-601 “Kimon”, built with Greek contribution at Naval Group shipyards in Lorient, is scheduled for its official flag-raising ceremony on December 18. The ship is expected to arrive at Faliron Bay by the end of December, enhancing the Hellenic Navy’s operational readiness.

The FDI HN Standard 2++ class combines advanced radar systems, weaponry, and anti-submarine capabilities, making it a critical asset for regional security. The Greek involvement in construction also strengthens domestic shipbuilding and technological expertise.

Strategic Significance for Greece

The delivery of the fourth frigate and the integration of the first FDI into the Hellenic Navy significantly boost naval deterrence amid tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean. It also reinforces Greece’s collaboration with European defense contractors, fostering state-of-the-art technology and long-term operational support.

Military analysts note that the full deployment of the FDI HN Standard 2++ frigates will considerably enhance the Navy’s operational flexibility and deterrent power, making the Hellenic frigates among the most modern in the Mediterranean.
