The Health Minister speaks on prevention, oncology, and digital innovation – a small revolution transforming Greek public health

In his interview, Adonis Georgiadis emphasized that Greece is taking decisive steps in prevention, oncology, and public health. “We are not just saving lives; we are building a system that will protect Greeks for decades,” he stated, presenting the results of the “Prolambano” program, which has already saved 178,000 people.

Greece at the Center of Preventive Care

At the 10th Annual ELLOK Conference, Minister Georgiadis outlined the country’s progress in preventive programs:

  • Sending 1,750,000 messages inviting citizens for free preventive screenings.
  • Detecting and treating 178,000 asymptomatic individuals, preventing serious complications like dialysis.
  • Integrating digital technology with public health through the National Cancer Registry and a mobile application for patients and doctors.

“If you detect a causative dysfunction early, a simple pill can maintain control for decades,” the Minister emphasized, putting citizens at the core of the health system.

Innovation and New Oncology Centers

Georgiadis highlighted major projects upgrading cancer care in Greece:

  • Sotiria Radiotherapy Center – to be completed by June 30, 2026, with state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Papageorgiou Immunotherapy Center – operational by Easter.
  • New oncology clinics in Lamia and Agios Nikolaos.
  • Digital oncology boards in hospitals, enhancing collaboration between doctors and patients.

“Greece has made a small revolution in cancer care,” he stated, noting that oncologists themselves recognize the measurable impact of these reforms.

Reducing Waiting Times and Increasing Efficiency in the NHS

Reforms go beyond prevention. Georgiadis detailed a drastic reduction in hospital waiting times:

  • -65% emergency wait times.
  • -86% waiting for surgeries in afternoon surgery programs.
  • Addition of 177 new beds at Attiko Hospital in 1.5 years, eliminating overcrowding.

“Anyone who doesn’t see this progress is either blind or deliberately ignoring reality,” he said, giving credit to the government’s strategic vision and his leadership.

People First – Digital Innovation and National Cancer Action Plan

The Minister outlined a vision for a comprehensive National Cancer Action Plan:

  • Collaboration with EKPA University and inter-ministerial teams for mapping and strategic planning.
  • Funding through the Public Investment Program 2026–2030.
  • Domestic production of innovative therapies, addressing rising oncology drug costs (10% increase from 2024 to 2025).

“The public sector must lead in producing innovative therapies and leave a lasting legacy for future ministers,” he declared, emphasizing preventive policies and NHS sustainability.

A Message to Citizens

Adonis Georgiadis concluded with a strong message:

“Greece will not wait for anyone to protect its citizens. Those who embrace prevention save their lives. Those who don’t, lose control.”

Under his leadership, Greece is building a state of prevention, innovation, and digital empowerment, putting people and their safety at the heart of policy.
