The EU’s decision to ban Russian natural gas imports by 2027 positions Greece as a strategic energy hub via the Vertical Corridor.

In a historic shift for Europe’s energy security, the European Union has adopted a regulation banning all Russian natural gas imports by fall 2027, confirming the bloc’s determination to fully phase out Russian energy dependence.

The legally binding measure, published in the Official Journal of the EU, is a cornerstone of the REPowerEU strategy, aimed at energy autonomy and diversification of supply sources, while ensuring market stability.

What This Means for the European Energy Market

  • Gradual phase-out of Russian natural gas and LNG imports, fully effective by fall 2027.
  • EU member states must submit national gas diversification plans by March 1, 2026, ensuring a smooth transition without energy shocks.
  • Strict monitoring of gas origin will prevent any circumvention of the new rules.

The EU Energy Commissioner described the ban as “fully legally justified and essential for the Union’s security,” emphasizing that the move removes a key tool of geopolitical pressure from Russia.

Greece Rises as an Energy Hub

Greece is at the center of this geopolitical realignment. Through the Vertical Energy Corridor, the country is poised to become a key transit hub for U.S. LNG and other energy flows to Central and Eastern Europe.

Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou emphasized that the project is a matter of national strategic importance, highlighting Greece’s potential to become a reliable energy hub, strengthen regional cooperation, and reduce reliance on non-European energy sources.

Meanwhile, the United States actively supports the Vertical Corridor’s success, with a planned meeting of involved energy ministers in Washington on February 24, 2026, to accelerate the project.

Geopolitical Implications for Europe

The ban on Russian imports signals a wider reshaping of Europe’s energy geopolitics. Once Russian flows are fully eliminated, the EU aims for greater energy security, diversified suppliers, and stronger ties with reliable partners such as the United States.

This move also ends the paradox of Europe, which simultaneously supports Ukraine while funding Russia through gas purchases.
