Washington is these days at the heart of Greece’s energy policy. Giorgos Stassis, CEO of PPC (Public Power Corporation), is heading to the U.S. capital to attract American investors for the Giga Data Center in Western Macedonia, while at the same time the new CEO of DESFA, Maria Sferoutsa, leads the Greek delegation for the Vertical Corridor, a critical natural gas transport project.
Behind the scenes of these meetings, Greece is aiming to leverage the geopolitical shifts caused by Europe’s energy crisis. The full halt of Russian gas flows makes the Vertical Corridor a strategic asset, while the Giga Data Center promises to turn Western Macedonia into a key artificial intelligence hub in Europe, with a capacity potentially covering five times Greece’s national demand.
Greece’s presence in the U.S. is reinforced by Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou’s contacts with the U.S. Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and the Exim Bank, during the Transatlantic Gas Security Summit. Meanwhile, the success of the recent Route 1 auctions highlights the potential of the new LNG corridor in Southeastern Europe.
According to unofficial sources, the Greek side aims to turn Washington into a launchpad for strategic deals, in both electricity and natural gas, with Alexandros Exarchou seeking a share of U.S. LNG imports.
The missions of Stassis and Sferoutsa, against the backdrop of international geopolitical balances, make it clear that Greece does not intend to remain a mere observer but aims to be a player shaping the rules of the energy game. If these talks succeed, by the end of 2026, Western Macedonia could be at the center of international investment and technological supremacy.
