Trade, strategic corridors and regional stability dominate a pivotal 50-minute meeting in Washington

In a meeting underscoring the growing strategic depth of Greek-American relations, Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis held talks in Washington with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, placing trade, investment and regional connectivity at the forefront of bilateral dialogue.

The 50-minute discussion, held at the White House, comes at a time of heightened geopolitical volatility across the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. Diplomatic sources describe the climate as “particularly constructive,” signaling a renewed momentum in the Athens–Washington axis.

Trade and Investment at the Core

A central pillar of the talks was the expansion of economic cooperation. Both sides reportedly emphasized strengthening trade flows and promoting targeted investments in sectors such as shipping, energy, artificial intelligence and advanced technology.

Athens is seeking to position itself as a stable gateway for U.S. capital into Southeast Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, while Washington views Greece as a reliable democratic partner in a strategically sensitive region.

IMEEC and Regional Connectivity

A key point of convergence was the advancement of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) — a major connectivity initiative linking Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Greek officials highlighted Greece’s potential role as a logistical and energy hub within this framework, reinforcing its geopolitical footprint.

The corridor is increasingly viewed as a strategic counterbalance in global supply chains and infrastructure diplomacy, enhancing transcontinental trade resilience.

Strategic Dialogue and Security Dimension

The two ministers also agreed to move forward with preparations for the 6th Round of the Greece–U.S. Strategic Dialogue, aiming to institutionalize cooperation across defense, energy security, climate policy and digital transformation.

Regional developments were also discussed, including the evolving situation in the Middle East and broader Euro-Atlantic coordination. Particular reference was reportedly made to the protection of vulnerable and minority populations amid ongoing instability.

A Message of Strategic Alignment

Following the meeting, Gerapetritis underscored that Greek-American relations are at “their highest possible level,” reaffirming Athens’ commitment to deepening cooperation across diplomatic, economic and defense domains.

The encounter signals not merely diplomatic continuity, but a calibrated strategic alignment in an era of shifting global balances — with Greece consolidating its role as a bridge between continents and a pillar of stability in the wider region.
