Europe’s energy map is being redrawn, and the Vertical Gas Corridor is rapidly emerging as a strategic backbone for LNG flows into Central and Eastern Europe. Following months of regulatory deadlock, the European Commission’s approval of a new pricing methodology marks a decisive turning point.
This is more than a technical fix—it is a geopolitical shift. Greece is now positioned as a key entry gateway for U.S. LNG into Europe, strengthening its role in regional energy security.
A new market structure for natural gas
For the first time, Transmission System Operators (TSOs) will offer a full range of capacity products—daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual—starting from the 2026–2027 gas year.
Previously, the system suffered from fragmented tariffs across countries (known as “pancaking”) and limited short-term offerings, which discouraged participation and resulted in weak auction demand.
The new framework significantly improves price visibility and enables long-term planning—critical factors for attracting major LNG players.
Statements – The geopolitical signal
“We have transformed our geography into geopolitical leverage and an investment magnet.”— Greek Energy Minister
“The Vertical Corridor is a strategic partnership that expands Europe’s energy options.”
At the same time, the United States has been actively pushing for the removal of regulatory barriers, recognizing the corridor as a vital route for American LNG exports into Europe.
The Exarchou factor – Early strategic positioning
A pivotal role has been played by AKTOR Group and Alexandros Exarchou, who backed the project early—well before regulatory clarity was achieved.
Through participation in LNG trading schemes, they secured export agreements to Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, effectively activating the corridor commercially ahead of its full institutional rollout.
LNG and energy security: The broader context
Timing is critical.
- The EU is accelerating its phase-out of Russian gas
- Instability in the Middle East is increasing supply uncertainty
- Qatar-related supply concerns are reshaping global LNG flows
- The U.S. is expanding its LNG footprint in Europe
Within this environment, the Vertical Corridor becomes a vital energy artery, linking Mediterranean LNG terminals with the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
What comes next
The market is now focusing on three key developments:
- Signing long-term LNG supply contracts
- Scaling infrastructure and transport capacity
- Harmonizing cross-border tariff systems
International interest is already rising, with multiple countries and energy firms preparing to engage in upcoming capacity auctions and long-term agreements.
The unblocking of the Vertical Corridor marks a strategic win for Greece and a critical step toward a more resilient European energy system.
The first battle has been won—but the real transformation of Europe’s LNG landscape is just beginning.
