Developments in the OPEKEPE scandal are accelerating, as a third case from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office is expected to be referred to the Hellenic Parliament. This latest case involves two sitting MPs, one of whom is a former minister, under investigation for alleged complicity in breach of duty, with OPKEPE officials identified as the alleged primary perpetrators.
Unlike the previous two cases, this most recent dossier has already been submitted to the Court of First Instance, marking an escalation in scrutiny of high-level political figures.
Investigation and potential legal liability
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is also reportedly examining the possibility of complicity in embezzlement by five former MPs. This process could shed light on the management of EU agricultural funds and the potential role of political figures in facilitating irregularities at OPKEPE.
The Speaker of Parliament, Nikitas Kaklamanis, told parliamentary reporters:“If the dossier concerning the ministers arrives by Sunday night, we will announce it on Monday.”
The case concerning 11 MPs will be referred directly to the Ethics Committee, chaired by Giorgos Georgantas, to initiate the relevant parliamentary procedures.
Parliamentary process and handling
The procedure follows the same pattern as the previous dossier on illegal agricultural subsidies, with Room 168 of Parliament specially prepared to review the findings submitted by the Greek delegation of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The involvement of current MPs and a former minister underscores the need for strict institutional accountability and intensifies calls for transparency and reliability in the management of European funds, political analysts note.
