“Israel as an Economic and Technological Miracle: A Strategic Ally of Greece”

On the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel, Greek Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis attended a commemorative event hosted by the Israeli Embassy in Athens, underlining through a public statement the strong political and diplomatic importance Greece places on its relationship with Israel.

In his remarks, he described Israel as a “model state” and “a true miracle of humanity,” emphasizing its rapid economic and technological development despite its relatively small geographical size.

The Greek minister stressed that Israel:

• possesses a strong economic foundation and high GDP relative to its size
• represents an example of successful state development
• maintains a close strategic partnership with Greece

At the same time, he referred to Israel’s democratic structure, describing it as one of the most mature multi-party democratic systems in the Middle East.

Economic and Technological Reality

Israel is considered one of the world’s most advanced economies, with a strong focus on innovation and technology.

• GDP: approximately $500–550 billion
• GDP per capita: around $50,000–55,000
• R&D spending: approximately 5% of GDP, among the highest globally
• Strong high-tech sector (roughly 18–20% of GDP)
• Thousands of internationally active startups
• Venture capital investment among the highest per capita worldwide

The country has developed one of the strongest technology ecosystems globally, particularly in cybersecurity, defense technology, and agricultural innovation.

The Strategic Greece–Israel Dimension

The minister’s remarks come within the framework of the steadily strengthening cooperation between Greece and Israel in recent years.

The two countries have developed close ties in:

• defense cooperation and joint military exercises
• energy partnerships in the Eastern Mediterranean
• technological and scientific collaboration
• trilateral cooperation schemes involving Cyprus

This geopolitical partnership is widely regarded as a significant factor of stability in the region, carrying substantial strategic importance for Greek foreign policy.

“Today, His Excellency the Ambassador of IsraelinGreece , Noam Katz, invited me to the celebration marking 78 years since the founding of the State of Israel. I attended with great pleasure, because I sincerely believe that Israel is a true miracle of humanity.

In an area roughly the size of the Peloponnese, they managed to build a state with a GDP equivalent to two Greeces. A state that stands out globally as a leader in high technology, information technology, agriculture, sciences, and more. A state that supports its friends and punishes its enemies.

At the same time, it possesses the most mature and complete democracy in the Middle East, with multi-party governments and full respect for the rights of all its citizens. You will find many Arab-origin Muslim Israeli citizens thriving there, but not a single Jew who could even take a walk in Gaza.

Today, Israel is among Greece’s closest friends, and our strategic cooperation is an enormous support for us.

I would also like to make special mention of the outstanding presence over the last four years of their Ambassador, who will complete his term this summer. He contributed decisively to the further development of our bilateral relations during difficult times. A true friend of ours.
