Mitsotakis: “Greece Has Always Been on the Right Side of History”
Prime Minister links economic strength, energy security, defense spending and strategic alliances to Greece's growing geopolitical role

At a time of mounting geopolitical uncertainty and shifting global power dynamics, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis delivered a message of strategic continuity and confidence, arguing that Greece’s international standing is increasingly rooted in the strength of its economy, its alliances and its role as a pillar of stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Speaking during a discussion with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour at an event marking the 15th anniversary of iefimerida.gr, Mitsotakis outlined his vision for Greece’s place in a world defined by geopolitical disruption, energy competition and renewed security challenges.

“Power Matters in Today’s World”

The Greek prime minister described the current international environment as one marked by significant geopolitical upheaval, where credibility, resilience and national strength have become increasingly important.

“Greece has always been on the right side of history,” Mitsotakis said.

“We have responded successfully to major challenges, and our position in the world today is supported by the strength of our economy.”

The statement reflects the government’s broader narrative that economic recovery and fiscal stability have enhanced Greece’s international influence, transforming the country from a source of concern during the debt crisis into a reliable regional partner.

Balancing Europe and the United States

A central theme of Mitsotakis’ remarks was Greece’s strategic relationship with both the European Union and the United States.

The prime minister emphasized that Athens sees its European identity and its transatlantic partnership as complementary rather than competing priorities.

“We are a committed member of the European Union, but we also maintain a strong alliance with the United States that we intend to honor, as we have done for many years,” he stated.

According to government officials, Greece’s approach is based on long-term strategic consistency, reinforcing its image as a dependable ally at a time when many international partnerships are being reassessed.

Energy Emerging as a Strategic Asset

Mitsotakis devoted considerable attention to energy cooperation, highlighting Greece’s growing role as a regional energy hub.

He pointed to partnerships with American companies and ongoing hydrocarbon exploration efforts as part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country’s energy footprint in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The prime minister also underscored the importance of liquefied natural gas imports from the United States.

“I am particularly pleased that we can purchase LNG from the United States and supply our northern neighbors,”he said.

The remarks reflect Athens’ ambition to position itself as a key energy gateway for Southeastern Europe while supporting regional energy diversification efforts.

Defense and Security at the Forefront

Defense cooperation formed another major pillar of Mitsotakis’ intervention.

The prime minister noted that Europe is entering a new era of higher military spending and greater responsibility for its own security.

Referring to the broader debate within NATO regarding burden-sharing, he argued that increased defense expenditures across Europe are helping ensure that the continent can better defend itself against emerging threats.

For Greece, which consistently ranks among NATO’s highest defense spenders relative to GDP, the changing security landscape presents both obligations and opportunities.

Athens has embarked on one of the most ambitious military modernization programs in its modern history, investing heavily in naval, air and land capabilities while deepening defense cooperation with key allies.

The Strategic Importance of the 3+1 Framework

Mitsotakis also highlighted the significance of the 3+1 cooperation framework, which brings together Greece, Cyprus, Israel and the United States.

The initiative has evolved into an important platform for regional coordination on energy, security and strategic affairs in the Eastern Mediterranean.

As regional tensions continue to shape geopolitical calculations, the framework is increasingly viewed as a mechanism for strengthening stability and advancing shared interests among participating countries.

A Message Beyond Foreign Policy

Beyond defense, energy and diplomacy, the prime minister’s remarks carried a broader political message about Greece’s trajectory.

The government seeks to project the image of a country that has emerged from years of economic crisis and is now pursuing a more influential role on the international stage.

By combining economic resilience, strategic partnerships, energy development and military modernization, Athens aims to reinforce its position as one of the West’s most reliable partners in a region marked by growing uncertainty.

The central message from Mitsotakis was clear: in a rapidly changing world where geopolitical competition is intensifying, Greece intends not merely to adapt to events but to play an active role in shaping them.
