In a brief but pointed intervention marking the third anniversary of October 7, 2023, Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis referred to the deadly Hamas-led attacks against Israel and reiterated his solidarity with the Israeli people.
Georgiadis wrote:
“We will never forget this crime against humanity committed by the Hamas terrorists! We stand with Israel.”
His post shared a message from the Embassy of Israel in Greece commemorating the October 7 attacks and recalling the events that unfolded during the first hours of that day.
The Day That Changed the Middle East
On October 7, 2023, Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups launched a coordinated assault on southern Israel.
More than 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals were killed, while 251 people were abducted and taken to the Gaza Strip, according to figures cited by the United Nations.
Israeli communities, civilian homes and the Nova music festival were among the sites attacked. Women, children and elderly people were among those taken hostage.
October 7 subsequently became the starting point of a conflict with enormous geopolitical and humanitarian consequences, dramatically reshaping the security landscape of the Middle East.
Georgiadis Sends a Clear Message
It is against this backdrop that Georgiadis’ latest intervention carries political significance.
By declaring that “we will never forget,” the Greek minister places the memory of the victims at the heart of his message.
His statement, “We stand with Israel,” also leaves no ambiguity about his own political position toward Hamas and his solidarity with Israel.
Georgiadis has repeatedly expressed this position in the public debate surrounding the Middle East, while the broader international discussion has continued to distinguish between condemnation of the October 7 attacks and questions surrounding the subsequent conduct of the war and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Three Years Later, the Memory Remains
The third anniversary comes with the Middle East profoundly transformed by everything that followed October 7.
Israeli military operations in Gaza have resulted in extensive Palestinian casualties and a severe humanitarian crisis, with the United Nations repeatedly emphasizing the protection of civilians and compliance with international humanitarian law.
At the same time, the international debate over October 7 continues to focus on the civilians who were killed and abducted during the attacks.
This is precisely the point emphasized by Georgiadis in his anniversary message.
Three years later, his message is specific: the victims of October 7 must not be forgotten, and terrorist violence deliberately directed against civilians cannot be justified.
