Greece, which holds the Security Council presidency in October, supports Ukraine’s request for a meeting on attacks against civilians – A session on Ukraine is scheduled for tonight in New York.

Greece has announced its support for Ukraine’s request to convene the United Nations Security Council, following escalating Russian attacks against civilians and residential areas.

The Foreign Ministry’s statement carries particular significance as Greece holds the Council’s presidency this month and helps manage its agenda.

“Greece stands firmly alongside Ukraine amid escalating Russian attacks on civilians and residential areas,” the ministry said in a post on X.

The UN’s official schedule lists a meeting on the maintenance of peace and security in Ukraine for Friday, October 9, at 3 p.m. in New York — 10 p.m. Greek time.

Athens’ Message to Kyiv

The Greek announcement directly links its support for Ukraine to the need for the latest attacks to be examined by the relevant UN body.

“Holding the presidency of the Security Council, Greece supports Ukraine’s request to convene the UN Security Council to address these attacks,” the ministry stated.

Athens is therefore backing a Council discussion where developments can be presented, member states can outline their positions, and the consequences for civilians can be examined.

The announcement concerns support for convening the Council. It does not announce additional Greek military assistance or a specific draft resolution.

Further Casualties and Pressure on Infrastructure

The intervention comes as strikes continue across Ukrainian regions.

According to the Associated Press, citing Ukrainian authorities, Friday’s attacks killed at least three people and injured eight, with incidents reported in the Zaporizhzhia, Ivano-Frankivsk and Kyiv regions.

Meanwhile, attacks on energy facilities and other critical infrastructure are increasing pressure on Ukraine ahead of winter. Protecting residents also depends on maintaining electricity, heating and essential services.

Civilian Protection Among Greece’s Presidency Priorities

Greece assumed the Security Council presidency on October 1, 2026, for the second time during its current term as an elected member.

The Foreign Ministry had already identified developments in Ukraine and the Middle East as key issues for its presidency. Its priorities also include protecting civilians, with particular emphasis on children affected by armed conflict.

When Greece assumed the presidency, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis.
