Embracing the spirit of antiquity, the ceremony, hosted by Nikos Aliagas, unfolded against the backdrop of Ancient Olympia
Greek actress Mary Mina, playing the role of high priestess, lit the torch using a backup flame instead of a parabolic mirror due to cloudy skies
The flame will travel from Crete to Alexandroupoli and from Corfu to Kastellorizo and will pass through 13 regions, seven Islands, 43 cities, 41 municipalities, five communities, 10 archaeological sites and two Olympic museums (Athens and Thessaloniki).
Among the most breathtaking discoveries are frescos adorning the walls of a large banqueting hall, showcasing mythical Greek figures, notably Helen of Troy, and scenes intricately depicting the events leading up to the Trojan War.
The move is part of a larger effort by the French government to promote the Olympic Games and to celebrate the country's rich cultural heritage.
