Plevris: Greece Pushes EU Emergency Migration Plan – Return Hubs in Africa Targeted for 2027
Greece is pushing for a new European emergency mechanism that would apply when migration is weaponized or arrivals reach exceptional levels, Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris said. Athens is also working with Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria on the first return hubs outside the EU, with an agreement with a third country expected around the end of 2026 or early 2027 and a pilot project planned for 2027. Plevris says Greece’s main migration pressure now comes from Libya, while arrivals across the Aegean remain sharply lower.
