A record 323,136 net new jobs were created in the first seven months of 2026, while unemployment fell to 7.9% from 17.9% in 2019 — shifting Greece’s labour-policy challenge from simply creating jobs to delivering better-paid, more productive and fully declared employment.
The number of employed persons amounted to 4,288,284 persons, increased by 61,559 persons as compared with January 2024 (1.5%) and by 8,794 persons compared withDecember 2024 (0.2%). The number of unemployed persons amounted to 408,181, decreased by 149,257 persons as compared with January 2024 (-26.8%) and by 28,830 persons compared with December 2024 (-6.6%).
Greek long term unemployment was only surpassed by Bosnia Herzegovina (9.6%). Spain was the 3rd worse with 4.3%
Unemployment is the greatest threat, he said, the government is facing since coming to power.
