A “surprise” in the latest opinion poll results, unveiled on Tuesday, shows no less than eight parties entering Greece’s 300-deputy parliament, a prospect that would mean a narrower majority for the first-past-the-post party in the upcoming June 25 election.

The poll, conducted by the Metron Analysis firm and presented on the prime-time newscast of Mega Channel, was held between June 7 and June 10 on a sample of 1,200 respondents.

Beyond the prospect of an eight-party Parliament, incumbent New Democracy (ND) is given 40.3 percent, nearly identical to the 40.8 percent it received in the recent May 21 election.

Conversely, rival SYRIZA party garnered 19.2 percent of respondents’ preference, down from 20.1 percent it received in the actual ballot last month – a difference of 21.1 percentage points.

If the tallies listed in the opinion poll and the number of parties entering Parliament play out, then conservative ND will receive roughly 157 seats in the legislature.

In the previous Metron Analysis opinion poll, ND was calculated as receiving 43.8 to 48.2 percent of the vote and 162 seats in Parliament.
