PM Mitsotakis to visit the flood-stricken areas in Thessaly; postpones going to TIF

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will visit the flood stricken areas of Thessaly in order to be informed about the disasters, carry out an autopsy in the areas and be informed about the needs and immediate recovery procedures, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis announced during a press briefing on Thursday.

Mitsotakis’ visit to Thessaloniki for the opening of the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) has been postponed. Both his speech and the press conference will take place next week, Marinakis added.

Greece is faced with an unprecedent phenomenon, Marinakis said.

At the moment, the problem is focused on the north-eastern part of Karditsa, while all prefectures of Thessaly are on alert.All Civil Protection forces, the Fire Brigade, the Hellenic Police, the Coast Guard along with the assistance of the army are operating.“The forces of the state mechanism intervene where necessary, the wider area of Thessaly is in a state of alert. The ultimate priority is the protection of human life and the protection of critical infrastructure. By the Prime Minister’s decision, a Coordination Center is already being set up in Larissa, where the co-competent ministers are expected to arrive,” he noted adding that since Tuesday, the Fire Department has received approximately 5,000 calls.

Also, the government spokesperson said that there will be a briefing by the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, together with the heads of GEETHA, the Hellenic Police and the Fire Department, at 14.00.
