The 14.6% increase in the cost of insurance claims (together with the increase in age) resulting from the IOBE index is based on an increase in the incidence of losses in 2023 at 19.5% (one in five insured people fell ill) and on an increase in the average cost of losses at €4,563.
The state will hire 530 permanent doctors to strengthen the public health system, the Health Ministry announced. This move gives priority to intensive care units (ICUs) and emergency departments in both Athens and provincial hospitals.
The recruitment process starts on 7 May and ends on 23 May via the esydoctors.moh.gov.gr website. The Health Minister Adonis Georgiades announced that the plan targets regional disparities, with 476 posts allocated outside Athens. The government hopes that the enhanced incentives, especially for remote areas, will attract candidates.
“This confirms our strategy to upgrade public health and fill critical gaps,” said Mr. Georgiades, underlining the partnerships with local authorities that offer their own incentives.
The announcement also included a significant boost to ambulance services, with the acquisition of 250 new ambulances by 2025 – the largest fleet renewal in Greece’s history. Combined with helicopters and aircraft donations, the emergency system of the EKAB is expected to reach historic levels of capacity.
Mr. Georgiades rejected criticism regarding the public health system, arguing that negativity undermines trust.
