Major upgrades and record passenger growth boost the country’s tourism outlook

Athens Airport Undergoes Major Expansion

Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” is set for a significant architectural and operational upgrade aimed at enhancing passenger experience and increasing revenue streams. The expansion plans include:

  • Adding 148,000 sqm to the Main Terminal Building (MTB) and Satellite Terminal Building (STB)
  • Construction of 32 additional aircraft parking stands
  • Increasing commercial space by 150%, which will boost non-aeronautical revenues and ensure the project’s long-term financial sustainability

Regional Airports Show Resilience and Growth

The 14 regional airports managed by Fraport Greece continue to record solid performance despite geopolitical challenges:

  • First half of 2025:
    • 12.95 million passengers (+1.9%)
    • 103,533 flights (+1.3%)
  • June 2025:
    • 5.35 million passengers
    • 4.52 million international passengers (+1.6%)

Losses from suspended flights to Israel were offset by increased traffic from Germany, Poland, and the UK.

Santorini Airport experienced a sharp decline (-17.2%) but shows signs of gradual month-by-month recovery.

According to INSETE data, a total of 28.5 million international seats have been scheduled for 2025—a 5.1% increase compared to last year.

Over half of these seats are concentrated in the third quarter of the year, with 18.22 million seats remaining through December, up 4.3% from 2024.
