Statement from Kostis Hadzidakis
“Why, one wonders – asks the Deputy Prime Minister – does this leave indifferent those who consistently pretend to hold the monopoly on social sensitivity?”
“Imagine if Bloomberg reported that Greece was failing badly in tackling tax evasion! There would be an uproar: opposition complaints, outraged social media reactions. Yet yesterday, when Bloomberg highlighted that the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis achieved a significant reduction in tax evasion, creating fiscal space to support the middle class… for the opposition and some analysts, it was just another Wednesday.”

Bloomberg and International Recognition
- Bloomberg’s article notes that Greece achieved a “remarkable fiscal turnaround”, previously thought unimaginable.
- Joong Shik Kang, head of the IMF mission for Greece, calls the results in curbing tax evasion “truly remarkable.”
- Greece’s shadow economy in 2009 was 27%, and the progress made has become a case study for other countries.
The Effort Since 2023
Hadzidakis recalls his tenure as Finance Minister in 2023:
- At the time, there were many doubters questioning the government’s determination.
- One of the 11 key initiatives to reduce tax evasion was the linking of POS systems with cash registers, which is now fully operational.
- Additionally, the expansion of myDATA has been launched and is being implemented gradually.
Social Impact & Personal Satisfaction
“Today we can say that what we promised, we delivered. Personally, I feel great satisfaction for contributing to this major effort with a strong social impact,” concludes the Deputy Prime Minister.
- This initiative demonstrates that combating tax evasion is not only a fiscal achievement but also a matter of social justice, protecting the middle class and promoting fairness.
