A historic milestone for Greek healthcare was marked with the completion of the new Onassis Hospital, officially inaugurated yesterday, with the presence of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. At the heart of the new facility is the Children’s Transplant Center, significantly enhancing Greece’s organ transplantation capacity, especially for children.
Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis emphasized in his statement:“A day of great joy has arrived, after more than a year and a half. We worked hard to be ready on time. And yesterday, the official inauguration of Onassis Hospital took place, with the Children’s Transplant Center. A new era begins for healthcare in Greece. I would like to thank the Onassis Foundation for their generous donation, the entire Onassis Hospital staff for their contribution, and all the technical services of the Ministry of Health, who worked day and night to ensure nothing was lost. Let us move forward with transplants, let us move forward for the benefit of Greek patients.”
The Onassis Foundation donation, initiated in 2019 and totaling €82 million to date, enabled the construction of the new building, which includes:
- The National Transplant Center, boosting organ donation and transplantation nationwide.
- The modernized Cardiac Surgery Center, equipped with hybrid operating rooms, robotic systems, and state-of-the-art hemodynamic laboratories.
- The new Onassis Children’s Unit, specialized in pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery, and pediatric transplants.

According to Onassis Foundation President Antonis Papadimitriou:“As societal needs increase, we proudly deliver the next major milestone of our vision, at the forefront of medical science: the new Onassis Hospital. A public-access hospital, open to everyone. We are not just delivering a high-tech building where technology serves people. We are creating a catalyst for the advancement of medicine in our country.”
Hospital President Professor Giannis Boletis emphasizes that the center maintains its philosophy of top-tier care across all ages, from infants to the elderly, with advanced transplants and pediatric cardiac surgery.
The new technologies include Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotic systems, state-of-the-art CT and MRI scanners, and specialized cardiovascular imaging systems, making Onassis the first fully digital hospital in Greece.
To date, the hospital has completed 267 heart transplants and 56 lung transplants, and programs are expanding to pediatric kidney and liver transplants, in collaboration with public hospitals across the country.
Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis’ strategy focuses on public-private partnerships, infrastructure upgrades, and innovation, establishing a model for modernizing healthcare in Greece and laying the groundwork for the “Hospital of the Future” project, which will implement over 50 innovations in the next decade.
The completion of the new Onassis Hospital represents a national milestone, combining cutting-edge technology, public access, and high-quality medical services. Georgiadis’ statement underscores the vision of a modern, digital, and innovative healthcare system, positioning Greece as a leader in transplantation and pediatric cardiology in the region.
Προχωράμε! pic.twitter.com/xWG0aFYeeB
