The Minister of Health highlights the strength of Greek pharmaceutical production and the role of local pharmacies as a cornerstone of national healthcare and innovation.

At the Zappeion Megaron, during the event of the Pharmacists’ CooperativeAdonis Georgiadis delivered a speech filled with pride and vision for the Greek pharmaceutical industry — emphasizing its vital contribution to the country’s economy, public health, and technological advancement.

“The existence of the domestic pharmaceutical industry is a small miracle,” said the Minister, underlining that Greece exports 10% of the medicines consumed by Europeans — an extraordinary achievement for a country representing only 2% of the European Union’s population.

Greece at the Forefront of Pharmaceutical Exports

The pharmaceutical industry — led by major companies such as ELPEN — stands as one of the most extroverted and dynamic sectors of the Greek economy. According to data from the Ministry of Development:

  • 10% of Greece’s total exports consist of pharmaceutical products.
  • Over 140 pharmaceutical companies operate within the country.
  • The sector employs more than 15,000 highly skilled professionals.

Thanks to coordinated efforts between the state, industry, and pharmacists, Greece has emerged as a key player in the European healthcare ecosystem.

11,000 Pharmacies – A National Network of Care

“The existence of nearly 11,000 Greek pharmacies is not a burden, but a great blessing,” Georgiadis noted.

He revealed that the government’s next major initiative will focus on leveraging this extensive pharmacy network — particularly in rural areas — by integrating artificial intelligence and digital health tools. The goal is to enable citizens to access basic preventive and economic health services through private pharmacies, ensuring equity and accessibility nationwide.

 Partnership and Vision

The Minister expressed his appreciation for the long-standing cooperation with Greek pharmacists:“Thank you very much for the excellent collaboration, and I wish you every success today. Be well.”

His address delivered a clear message of continuity and progress in pharmaceutical policy — supporting domestic production, fostering innovation, and empowering citizens through technology.

A New Era for Greek Health Policy

Adonis Georgiadis’ strategy goes beyond words: he is building a sustainable, competitive, and future-oriented pharmaceutical model. At a time when health systems face growing challenges, the Greek Minister of Health proves that Greece can not only produce — but also lead.
