From record cultural investments to farmers’ protests, Parliament witnesses intense political confrontations over Greece’s economic priorities

In a tense parliamentary debate over the 2026 State Budget, ministers defended government achievements while opposition parties sharply criticized policy gaps. Agriculture, energy, healthcare, and culture emerged as focal points, revealing both political fault lines and strategic investments shaping Greece’s future.

Agriculture under scrutiny

Agriculture dominated the debate as farmers escalated protests, refusing to meet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Agriculture Minister Kostas Tsiaras urged dialogue:

“Solutions come when both sides sit at the table. The era of unchecked subsidies is over. Mistakes may happen during this transition, but we have our eyes on the problems,” he said.

Tsiaras highlighted €3.8 billion in payments for farmers this year, promising a transparent, modernized OPEKEPEsystem. Opposition MPs, however, denounced hypocrisy. SYRIZA’s Kostas Barkas argued, “You treat farmers like beggars; you owe them these funds, not gift them,” while the KKE’s Nikos Karathanasopoulos called government assurances “empty promises.”

Meanwhile, Police Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis refuted claims of excessive force during protests in Crete, insisting that no plastic bullets were used and emphasizing the Greek FBI’s crackdown on subsidy fraud, with over €33 million frozen.

Culture as an engine of growth

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni presented a different, positive narrative, emphasizing the transformative power of culture in the Greek economy:

“For over six years, culture has ceased to be a passive recipient of funds. It has become a profitable engine of development, mobilizing resources, creating jobs, and generating income for new projects,” she said.

Currently, the Ministry oversees 850 active projects worth €1.3 billion, from heritage preservation to digital transformation. The 2026 Ministry budget rises to €653 million, compared to €295 million in 2019, while public investment surges to €375 million, up from €28 million in 2018, marking a 911% increase.

“Culture creates economy and social cohesion. It is a vehicle for wealth redistribution and upward mobility, improving citizens’ quality of life,” Mendoni highlighted.

Energy, healthcare, and political clashes

Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou stressed the strategic importance of hydrocarbon development and energy security, calling for national consensus on energy projects. Opposition MPs, including SYRIZA and KKE representatives, criticized high energy costs and perceived government favoritism toward international corporations.

Healthcare Minister Adonis Georgiadis came under fire for remarks toward opposition MPs, defending government investments in the sector while facing accusations of undermining the public health system. Opposition MPs warned of budget cuts and underfunding, particularly through the mid-term fiscal plan.

Budget overview and political context

The 2026 State Budget reflects growing public investment, targeted social programs, and strategic sectoral support, including agriculture, culture, energy, and healthcare. Ministers repeatedly framed these policies as essential for long-term economic stability and social cohesion, while opposition MPs called out mismanagement, delays, and alleged scandals.

“The budget is not just numbers—it is a blueprint for social equity and economic transformation,” Mendoni concluded, encapsulating the government’s argument that strategic investments in culture and other sectors are key to Greece’s competitive and inclusive growth.
