Atlantic SEE LNG Trade is entering a fast-track phase, signaling a major upgrade of Greece as a key energy hub in Eastern Europe. The company, a joint venture of AKTOR (60%) and DEPA Commercial (40%), is aiming to finalize critical LNG supply agreements by summer, paving the way for new FSRU investment.
CEO Alexandros Exarchou stated:
“Our goal is to secure contracts for approximately 5 bcm per year in the coming months. Completing these agreements is critical to planning a new LNG terminal in Greece by the end of the decade.”
NEW FSRU IN ALEXANDROUPOLI: STRATEGIC INVESTMENT
Atlantic SEE is considering a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) with 4.5–5 bcm/year capacity, operational between 2028 and 2030. Alexandroupoli is the frontrunner for the location, hosting Greece’s first FSRU and complementing the Revythoussa facility.
The benefits for AKTOR and Exarchou include:
- Strengthening AKTOR’s position in major international energy projects
- Increasing revenue streams from new infrastructure
- Strategic visibility for Greece as an LNG hub
Exarchou emphasized:“With the new FSRU, we are boosting south-to-north gas flows while establishing Greece as a critical node on the Vertical Corridor.”
SUPPLY AGREEMENTS & GEOPOLITICAL CONTEXT
Atlantic SEE has already secured:
- 20-year deal with U.S. Venture Global for up to 4 bcm/year from 2030
- MoUs with Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Ukraine
- Priority negotiations with Albania, Romania, and Bosnia, with a new deal expected in April
The Middle East geopolitical tension accelerates the need for early LNG supply:
“The Iran conflict is pushing Europe to secure U.S. LNG faster, and we are preparing to receive cargoes as early as 2027,” said Exarchou.
BENEFITS FOR AKTOR AND EXARCHOU
The involvement of AKTOR and Exarchou in Atlantic SEE provides strategic and financial advantages:
- Enhanced corporate presence in critical energy projects
- Increased market share in LNG expected to grow strongly by 2030
- Political leverage through participation in international energy infrastructure
- Integration with European and U.S. LNG supplies, enabling cross-continental synergies
Atlantic SEE acts not just as a commercial player but as a geostrategic catalyst in Eastern Europe.
With AKTOR and Alexandros Exarchou at the helm:
- Greece strengthens its role on the Vertical Corridor
- Corporate stakeholders gain economic and political benefits
- LNG becomes a tool of energy and geopolitical influence
The market restructuring shows that Europe’s gas flows are increasingly shaped by infrastructure, long-term contracts, and geopolitical instability, defining who controls energy access in the coming years.
