Mitsotakis from Jordan: “The ongoing crisis poses serious challenges”
Strong message on Middle East de-escalation – Focus on Greece–Cyprus–Jordan cooperation, energy security, and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz

From Amman, Jordan, during the 5th Greece–Cyprus–Jordan Trilateral Summit, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis addressed the rapidly evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East, emphasizing diplomacy, stability, and international cooperation at a time of heightened regional uncertainty.

The summit takes place against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the broader Middle East and Gulf region, which are already affecting global trade routes and energy markets.

“The crisis poses serious challenges for all of us”

Mitsotakis underlined the gravity of the situation, stating:

“The crisis that is unfolding at this moment raises serious challenges, not only for regional peace and security, but also for the economies of all of us.”

He stressed that the impact of instability extends far beyond the region, affecting global supply chains and economic stability.

A message of cooperation and international law

Opening his remarks, the Greek Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the trilateral partnership:

“This meeting sends a very clear and timely message: a message of friendship, cooperation, and unwavering commitment to international law and peaceful coexistence.”

He also praised Jordan’s role as a stabilizing force in the region, acknowledging its leadership and contribution to maintaining regional balance.

 Energy, investment, defense, and connectivity

Mitsotakis emphasized that cooperation among Greece, Cyprus, and Jordan can expand significantly across key sectors:

  • energy
  • investments
  • connectivity
  • defense
  • tourism
  • climate action

“We can set much higher goals. The agenda is broad, as it should be,” he noted.

Greece and Cyprus as strategic bridges

The Prime Minister highlighted the role of Greece and Cyprus as a natural bridge between Europe, the Middle East, and the Gulf.

He stressed that security and prosperity are interconnected:

“What happens in the Eastern Mediterranean and your region is very important for the security and prosperity of the European Union as a whole.”

Strait of Hormuz: “Return to the status quo”

One of the most significant points of his address concerned the Strait of Hormuz, amid growing concerns over maritime security.

Mitsotakis was explicit:

“We want to be very clear: we must return to the previous status quo.”

He added:“We are strong advocates of freedom of navigation.”

The statement reflects Greece’s long-standing position in support of maritime security and international trade routes, including its role within the United Nations Security Council framework.

 Regional conflicts: Gaza and Lebanon

The Prime Minister also referred to broader regional developments:

  • In Lebanon, he stressed support for the government and full respect for the ceasefire.
  • Regarding Gaza, he called for progress toward peace implementation and institutional reform of the Palestinian Authority.

He reiterated Greece’s support for a two-state solution:

“The only viable path to lasting peace is the two-state solution.”

Mitsotakis’ remarks from Jordan reflect a consistent diplomatic message centered on:

  • de-escalation in the Middle East
  • strengthening regional partnerships
  • safeguarding global maritime routes
  • promoting energy and economic cooperation

At a time of heightened geopolitical volatility, Greece positions itself as a proponent of stability, dialogue, and international law in the wider Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region.
