Turkey says NATO allies were informed in advance, while the EU views the pact as potentially complementary to Western security efforts — but concerns over Pakistan’s Chinese defence links are growing.
Saudi Arabia, Turkey and nuclear-armed Pakistan have signed a collective-defence agreement in Mecca whose central principle inevitably evokes NATO’s Article 5: an armed attack against one is to be treated as an attack against all. There is no integrated command, no NATO-style military headquarters and no fully unified fighting force — at least not yet. But something potentially more consequential has happened: three of the Muslim world’s most powerful states have begun building a security architecture that does not depend exclusively on Washington.
The new trilateral defence pact looks like an “Islamic NATO,” but its real credibility will only be tested in a crisis — Türkiye has NATO, Pakistan has its nuclear deterrent and its India problem, while Riyadh faces a completely different threat environment. The pact may be less a finished alliance than a hedge against uncertainty over the old security order.
